Super Duplex stainless steels are becoming more common. They are being offered by all the major stainless steel mills for a number of reasons:

1. Higher strength leading to weight saving
2. Greater corrosion resistance particularly stress corrosion cracking
3. Better price stability

Super Duplex Thermowell, also referred to as austenitic-ferritic stainless steels, are a family of grades having around equal proportions of austenite and ferrite.

These steels have a duplex microstructure which contributes to their high strength and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Duplex steels offer high resistance to uniform and local corrosion because of their high content of nitrogen, chromium and molybdenum. Duplex stainless steels have good weldability.

The austenite and ferrite micro-structure of duplex stainless steel has a number of benefits over austenitic stainless steel. Much improved since their introduction in the 1930’s, the low nickel content of duplex stainless steels makes them a more cost effective option.

The use of nitrogen as a replacement for expensive nickel gives several advantages, including enhanced tensile properties and greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, and they are twice the strength of austenitic stainless steels. Their lighter weight also makes duplex stainless steels cheaper to transport and assemble.

Inconel 625 & 825 Thermowells which includes Inconel  Flanged Thermowells and Inconel Straight Thermowells

High tensile, creep, and rupture strength; outstanding fatigue and thermal-fatigue strength; oxidation resistance; and excellent weldability and brazeability are the properties of INCONEL alloy 625 that make it interesting to the aerospace field.

Titanium  Thermowells, Titanium Flanged Thermowell ,Titanium Straight Thermowell

 titanium machining possesses similar characteristics to austenitic stainless steel. Although titanium is commonly perceived as challenging to machine, Grade 2 can be machined easily by following the recommended protocol—low cutting speeds, heavy feed rates, generous amounts of cutting fluids, sharp tools and rigid setups.

The high strength, low weight ratio and outstanding corrosion resistance inherent to titanium and its alloys has led to a wide and diversified range of successful applications which demand high levels of reliable performance in surgery and medicine as well as in aerospace, automotive, chemical plant, power generation, oil and gas extraction, sports, and other major industries.

In the majority of these and other engineering applications titanium has replaced heavier, less serviceable or less cost-effective materials. Designing with titanium taking all factors into account has resulted in reliable, economic and more durable systems and components, which in many situations have substantially exceeded performance and service life expectations.

Grade 2 titanium is called the “workhorse” of the commercially pure titanium industry, thanks to its varied usability and wide availability. It shares many of the same qualities as Grade 1 titanium, but it is slightly stronger. Both are equally corrosion resistant.

This grade possesses good weldability, strength, ductility and formability. This makes Titanium Grade 2 Thermowells the prime choice for many fields of applications..

Hastelloy C276 Thermowells, Hastelloy Flanged Thermowell ,Hastelloy Straight Thermowell

Hastelloy C276 Thermowell is a wrought corrosion-resistant alloy. A prime advantage of this alloy is that it generally does not require solution heat treatment after welding. It resists the formation of grain boundary precipitates that would degrade corrosion resistance.

Hastelloy C276 Thermowell is well known for Good machinability, although the alloy work hardens as is true of the nickel base alloys in general.Can be cold worked by all conventional methods.Weldable by all common methods except that excessive heat input should be avoided. Can be used in the “as-welded” condition without further heat treatment for most corrosive applications.The alloy can be forged or hot-upset by conventional means.Can be hot formed or extruded. Should be solution heat treated following hot forming.

Some of the area of present or potential use for alloy Hastelloy C276 Thermowells are: Acetic acid/Acetic Anhydride, cellophane manufacturing, chlorine spargers, chlorination systems, circuit board etching equipment, complex acid/chemical mixtures, fans and blowers, galvanizing line equipment, gas scrubber systems, geothermal wells, HF furnaces, incineration systems, nuclear fuel reprocessing, pesticide production, phosphoric acid applications, pickling system components, plate heat exchangers, selective leaching systems, sulfur oxide cooling towers, sulfonation systems, and tubular heat exchangers.

Like other nickel alloys, it is ductile, easy to form and weld, and possesses exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride-bearing solutions (a form of degradation to which the austenitic stainless steels are prone). With its high chromium and molybdenum contents, it is able to withstand both oxidizing and non-oxidizing acids, and exhibits outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice attack in the presence of chlorides and other halides. Furthermore, it is very resistant to sulfide stress cracking and stress corrosion cracking in sour, oilfield environments.

Monel Thermowells is well known for its high strength and corrosion resistant properties. It works in a wide range of temperatures, and is available in multiple forms for a variety of products. Monel is used extensively in (for pipe) piping. Resistant to both steam and seawater, its toughness and anti-corrosive properties make it perfect for heavy duty applications such as transfer (pipe) piping used in oil refineries. Monel Thermowells has been specifically designed for use on instrumentation, process and control systems, together with equipment employed in chemical, chromatography, petroleum, power generation and pulp & paper plants.

Monel Thermowells is also often used for the high tolerance tubing. It exhibits excellent weldability, and it is often found in marine applications such as seawater valves and pump shafts. These tubes are also used in chemical plant equipment, boiler feeders, and heat exchangers. For applications that require a high melting point and toughness under the harshest conditions.

We offer a range of stainless steel welded construction thermowells for use with our range of 6mm diameter Thermocouple or Pt100 sensors. They are ideal for applications where the removal of the sensor could prove complicated such as on a vessel, pipe or tank. They are 12.7mm O.D. and are available with a ½ inch BSP taper process entry thread and ¼ inch BSP parallel sensor entry thread. A wide choice of immersion depths (under the thread) is available to suit various lengths of temperature sensor. Use a ¼ in BSP stainless steel fitting to attach the sensor to the thermowell.
